Homemade Powdered Coffee Creamer, Unflavored

Happy Friday!

My cousin, Pam, in Louisiana had this posted on her FB page, so I thought I'd pass it along!

Now, back to our regularly scheduled post...   :D

I've been wanting a good recipe for a powdered coffee creamer, like the original Coffee Mate.  I went to Pinterest and searched, but all I found were for liquid coffee creamers.

So, I googled "powdered coffee creamers" Wednesday and didn't really see much.  There was one that caught my eye, though, but I can't find it again.  I've tweaked the recipe a bit, so if you still recognize it (not difficult), let me know and I'll gladly give you all the credit!

Here's my version...

Homemade Powdered Coffee Creamer Recipe, Unflavored

2 cups powdered milk
1/4 cup + 1 heaping Tablespoon powdered sugar
3 Tablespoons melted Coconut oil

Powdered milk, solid coconut oil (melt before using), powdered sugar

Mix powdered mik together with the powdered sugar. The original recipe called for 1/4 cup powdered sugar only, but my coffee just didn't taste right.  There was a nasty bitter aftertaste, so I added another heaping tablespoonful of the powdered sugar.

This is the size spoon I used, a cereal spoon. Left over oil can be put back into the original container.

Blend the 3 ingredients together with a fork, breaking up any oil lumps.

I didn't like the consistency of this "powdered" (more like nuggets) coffee creamer, so I put everything into the blender.  Guess you wouldn't need to stir with a fork, if you used this method.

This looked more like Coffee Mate, or any of the other creamers.

See?

I reused the empty coffee creamer container for my new concoction.  I temporarily taped a wide-mouthed canning funnel to the container opening, so I wouldn't spill the powder as I poured it in and snapped this shot.

Mighty fine for homemade, if I do say so myself!
I used 2 teaspoons of the mix in my coffee.  My normal coffee mug is not this dainty little white dealie.  I have a HUGE coffee mug that holds maybe 3 of the these!  I don't care if it gets cold, 'cause I like it cold, too! ;D

If you try this recipe, let me know what you think!

I'm sharing this with Jessa's A Holiday Haven Christmas Party.

Take care and God Bless!

Joy! I love this post. You are so fun. This tutorial is wonderful, and so 'real'. My hubby uses the yucky coffee mate from the store that is NOT made with anything that resembles dairy, think I am going to have to give this a shot. Thanks for sharing this to the party :) Pinning and tweeting it.

I also was looking for a powdered creamer and tried yours today! I added a Teaspoon of Powdered vanilla. I was super pleased with the way it dissolved in my coffee right away. I do notice some of the coconut oil has settled at the bottom of my jar. Did yours separate?

Hi Sandra,
Yes, it did separate, but was ok once in the coffee. The addition of the powdered vanilla is genius! Where can I find it?

I'm a bit confused! I would like to try this recipe, but am a little confused on the quantity of ingredients. When listing the ingredients you state 1/4 tsp plus a heaping tbs of powdered sugar. However, when discussing the mixing of ingredients, you state 1/4 cup plus one heaping tbs of powdered sugar. Well, there is quite a bit of difference between 1/4 tsp and 1/4 cup!!! So, I'm a little lost and confused. I'm thinking that the 1/4 cup is probably the correct amount, but thought I should clarify it first, just to be sure, and also to give you the opportunity to correct it! Thanks!

Hi Georganne,
I appreciate your catching this error! I will change it right away. It should be 1/4 CUP + a heaping tablespoon of powdered sugar. Just goes to show ya, a fresh pair of eyes are needed when proofreading! :)

I've been buying a certain brand of coffee creamer for years. Now they admit to changing it which is why it now tastes like French vanilla. That may be fine for some but I don't like flavored coffee. Is this really non-flavored considering the coconut oil? If so you just became my best friend!!!!

Hi Diane,

The coconut oil I used was the LouAna brand, which imparted no flavor to the powder. I got it at either Walmart or our local Jay-C grocery store (affiliated with Kroger), so it was easy to come by. Enjoy!

I want to make some of this (but add some flavors, once I get the texture perfect) for Christmas gifts. I made it just now, but am finding that there is some 'clumping' in the bottom of my coffee cup. I'm using a NutriBullet to mix it, and just not sure where the clumping is from. But, the flavor is SO good, and I do like the texture...just not sure about the clumpy residue in the cup...suggestions?

I am allergic to tree nuts. Is there a different alternative for the coconut oil?
